Tallahassee Community College Workforce Development

In March of 2013, I stumbled upon the opportunity to be the Social Media and Marketing Intern for Tallahassee Community College’s Workforce Development branch. Upon my arrival, TCC’s Workforce Development was undergoing some serious changes and advancement, with their newly elected Vice President Kimberly Moore. My position was unprecedented and I worked very closely with VP Moore to not only create a standard for this role but to advance TCC’s Workforce Development to a level of outreach that was never seen at the center.

My first task with TCC Workforce Development was to present a plan of what the department was doing, and then what it could be doing based on what similar organizations had in place. With little online presence, the TCC Workforce Development was in need of a serious overhaul of its pre-existing digital presence and more defined social media presence. I pulled examples from other Workforce Development Centers on how we could expand and better the overall department’s digital marketing strategy.

VP Moore gave me full creative power to develop a guideline for how TCC Workforce Development would be represented via social media. Following the brand standards of Tallahassee Community College, which was listed first in the nation graduating students with A.A.s in 2013, I revamped the Workforce Development’s Facebook page to outline the various offerings of the department. I increased the frequency of postings and overall engagement with page followers. Check out the type of content I created in the December Content Schedule for Facebook,

I was also tasked by VP Moore to create and establish a Twitter presence for TCC Workforce Development that would appeal to the Business minded clientele that this department had. Creating content that revolved around employment facts, industry insider insights, and business tips helped create a following of business professionals to share the department’s offerings too. Although Facebook and Twitter where the main focus of our social media plan, I also helped manage the YouTube Account and FourSquare profile for TCC Workforce Development. Creating video playlist, caption edits, and tips on these accounts. In addition, I worked with the overall communication department at TCC to add all of our services to the Tallahassee Community College LinkedIn Profile. In the time that I worked with TCC Workforce Development, the department went from having a minimal online presence to a rather diverse digital marketing plan.

In addition to the social media sites, I also assisted TCC Workforce Development in introducing and utilizing a variety of online tools in order to maximize what exactly social media could do for the department. I introduced Hootsuite as a way of scheduling and preplanning social media postings, as well as monitoring various buzzwords that I deemed to directly relate to the interests of TCC Workforce Development. I also had the opportunity to introduce WooBox, a contest/sweepstake management tool, to Workforce Development as a way to promote local businesses featured in our giveaways and draw in new followers and likes to the social media account.

Although I was working specifically for TCC’s Workforce Development, I also worked hand-in-hand with TCC’s Communication Department. Being part of TCC put Workforce Development under the same guidelines and restrictions as the other departments of the college. Giving me ample experience when it comes to approval processes and a variety of other procedures in order to ensure that Tallahassee Community College‘s interests and beliefs were represented appropriately.
